The ‘Use of Earth Observation for Natural and Cultural Heritage’ workshop is being hosted jointly by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL), a scientific network of European remote sensing institutes from academia and the commercial/industrial sector.

The purpose of the workshop is to enable actors in Earth observation (EO) for heritage to demonstrate to the EO community and those in the heritage sector that the state-of-the-art in EO data and technology is now sufficiently developed to support heritage activities in a wide variety of areas.

Andrea Cavallini, Starion’s Competence Area Lead for ‘EO and Downstream’ and ‘AI and Machine Learning’, will be presenting a paper on the SmartDig archaeology service that Starion is developing. SmartDig applies artificial intelligence (AI) to EO data to spot, identify and classify cultural heritage sites that may be endangered by building construction and other public works.
