Starion is a Tier 1 integrator of end-to-end quantum-safe communications, for space and using space assets. We work with carefully selected partners to provide operational solutions over fibre and satellite in existing national and international environments, no matter how complex.
Our solutions employ the latest in quantum key distribution (QKD) and post-quantum cryptography, the next enablers of cybersecurity for communications for critical business applications.
Since 2022, we’ve been managing the International Use Cases for Operational QKD Applications and Services (INT-UQKD) project, which is demonstrating use cases for QKD by deploying operational capability in existing, real-life international IT environments.
The latest milestone for the INT-UQKD project was the launch on 28 November 2025 of the SpeQtre satellite, built by SpeQtral and RAL Space. The satellite hosts a quantum communication payload developed by SpeQtral with a software component developed by evolutionQ exclusively for the INT-UQKD project. This purpose-built payload will provide a platform for the demonstration in 2026 of intercontinental quantum-safe communications through the INT-UQKD project.
The International Use Cases for Operational QKD Applications and Services (INT-UQKD) project is developing operational quantum-safe communications capability in international IT environments. This includes implementation of QKD networks connecting Luxembourg, Belgium, Singapore, Canada and the UK.
The definition and validation of use cases is expected to guide future international QKD solutions, with a focus on digital sovereignty and strategic autonomy. Creating real-life operational demonstrations helps with the assessment of technology and security compliance, and identification of related policy requirements.
Starion is managing the INT-UQKD project and acting as system integrator. Project partners are POST Luxembourg, the University of Luxembourg’s SnT, HITEC Luxembourg, evolutionQ (Canada) and SpeQtral (Singapore).
INT-UQKD is funded through ESA’s ARTES programme and by the Singaporean Office for Space Technology & Industry.
