We are looking for a Space Systems Engineer to work at ESTEC’s premises in Noordwijk, Netherlands.

About the client and location

The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. As ESA’s largest test centre, it is responsible for the majority of space technology and spacecraft development through varying phases of production.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Providing systems engineering support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes, and studies, including assistance with project reviews and feasibility assessments at the Concurrent Design Facility (CDF).
  • Managing requirements, supporting flow-down from system to subsystems/units, maintaining traceability, and keeping the requirements database / Verification Control Document (VCD) up to date.
  • Identifying system drivers, supporting design evaluations and trade-off studies, and contributing to discussions on optimal spacecraft architectures.
  • Tracking system budgets across project lifecycles to support compliance and performance checks.
  • Supporting verification activities at mission and ground levels, including managing non-conformances, deviations, and waivers.
  • Maintaining and updating system interfaces with other segment elements, and contributing to operations concept discussions and FDIR (Failure, Detection, Isolation, Recovery) definition.
  • Collaborating across teams operations, ground segment, and end-to-end/mission system teams to ensure seamless integration and execution.
  • Providing inputs for reporting, highlighting risks, and supporting implementation of mitigation measures.
  • Assisting during launch preparation, in-flight commissioning, and verification activities, ensuring mission readiness and performance.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • A Master’s degree, or equivalent, in a relevant technical or scientific discipline (e.g. Space System Engineering).
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience with procurement and technical monitoring of industrial activities.
  • Experience with Space Engineering Standards and their preparation and implementation.
  • Knowledge of Space Missions and Spacecraft Systems Design.
  • Understanding of space systems architectures.
  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering in the early project phases (trade-offs, budgets, identification of critical technology developments, etc).
  • Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
  • Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
