We are looking for a Satcom System Engineer to work at ESA’s premises in Harwell, UK or in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. You will support technology and product development activities carried out by industry for Ground Segment infrastructure enabling RF and/or optical satellite communication links.
About the client and location
The European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Harwell, UK. With special focuses on the link between space and telecommunications, ECSAT also hosts ESA’s Earth Observation Climate Office. It is from here that ESA’s Climate Change Initiative programme is executed.
The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. As ESA’s largest test centre, it is responsible for most of the space technology and spacecraft development through varying phases of production.
Tasks and activities
The scope of work will include:
- Coordinating the initiation of activities related to technology and product design and development for telecommunications systems.
- Support the adoption of standardized digital interfaces (e.g., DIFI, VITA-49) for RF or/and Optical Ground Stations
- Support projects developing innovative ground segment architecture and the migration of ground station functions (modems, network management, and hub processing) into containerized environments
- Support projects that decouple signal processing from proprietary hardware using SDN (Software-Defined Networking) and SDR (Software-Defined Radio) techniques.
- Evaluating, negotiating, monitoring and controlling contracts and activities related to technology and product development for satellite telecommunication ground segments.
- Monitoring market and technology trends and developments in satellite communication ground segments.
- Providing input for the Department Business Intelligence management system.
- Supporting Communication activities in line with the ESA Communication Policy rules.
Skills and experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- University Degree or equivalent in Engineering or a relevant field.
- A minimum of 3 – 4 years of industry experience in the design and development of satellite telecommunications user or ground segment products and technologies.
- Expertise in Satellite Communication Digitalization e.g., Containerization, virtualization technologies, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Software Defined Radio (SDR), interoperability solutions, AI/ML.
- Expertise in RF and optical communication systems and networking
- Communication protocols including quality of service aspects, security aspects, upper layer techniques in IP and networking and air interface techniques.
- Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
- Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
