We are are looking for a Clean Space and Safety Engineer to work at one of ESA’s sites.
You will support the development and implementation of sustainable space technologies, focusing on environmental life-cycle assessment, space debris mitigation, end-of-life solutions, and in-orbit servicing missions.
The role provides systems engineering, technical coordination, and project management support across Clean Space initiatives, including Zero Debris, Active Debris Removal, and environmental sustainability programs.
The position involves collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, oversight of technology development activities, and contribution to future space sustainability and circular economy concepts.
Tasks and activities
The scope of work will include:
Environmental Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA)
- Supporting the development, maintenance, and review of environmental Life-Cycle Assessment databases for space applications.
- Evaluating environmental impacts at system and mission level and contribute to sustainability assessments.
- Developing and implementing methodologies for measuring and reducing the environmental footprint of space activities.
- Supporting eco-design and environmentally sustainable technology developments for space systems.
End-of-Life and Zero Debris Activities
- Supporting technology developments for satellite servicing, Design-for-Removal, and end-of-life disposal solutions.
- Ensuring compliance with Space Debris Mitigation and Zero Debris requirements.
- Providing system engineering support for capture systems and in-orbit demonstration missions.
Systems Engineering
- Coordinating the establishment and implementation of Life-Cycle Assessment frameworks.
- Providing systems engineering support for de-orbiting technologies and other end-of-life solutions.
- Supporting the integration and coordination of sustainability, Zero Debris, and end-of-life activities across projects.
Skills and experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- Master’s degree or PhD or equivalent qualification in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Space Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Professional experience of minimum 3 years in supporting multidisciplinary engineering projects within the space sector.
- Knowledge of space sustainability, environmental impact assessment, and Life-Cycle Assessment methodologies.
- Understanding of space debris mitigation, end-of-life disposal strategies, and Zero Debris principles.
- Familiarity with active debris removal, in-orbit servicing, robotics, GNC, sensors, and related space technologies.
- Experience in technical project management, technology development, and industrial coordination.
- Ability to review technical documentation, requirements, and engineering deliverables.
- Knowledge of requirements management and systems engineering tools and standards (IBM DOORS, MBSE, ECSS).
- Ability to engage effectively with scientific users, operational stakeholders, industrial partners, and software development teams.
- Strong analytical, organisational, and reporting skills.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:
- Proficiency in German is a plus.
