We are currently seeking a System Security Engineer to support ESA’s Earth Observation programmes. Working alongside a team of experienced security experts, you will help protect critical space services, address complex security challenges, and contribute to the success of Europe’s leading space missions. Based in Frascati, Italy, this role offers flexible hybrid working and the opportunity to make a lasting impact in the space sector.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Conducting security risk assessments for space, ground and user-segment systems, recommending effective risk mitigation measures in line with ECSS, CCSDS, ISO/IEC 27005 and EBIOS methodologies.
  • Defining, maintaining and enhancing security requirements across the full lifecycle of space systems, services and projects.
  • Reviewing technical documentation and system designs to ensure compliance with security requirements, standards and accreditation constraints, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Supporting the Project/System Security Officer in evolving the Earth Observation Security Framework and contributing to system certification and accreditation activities.
  • Developing and maintaining key security deliverables, including policies, procedures, risk assessments, technical notes and assurance reports.
  • Tracking the implementation of security controls and drive the follow-up of risks, treatment plans and remediation actions with stakeholders and service providers.

Skills and experience

  • Degree in Computer Science, IT, Information Security, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • 5+ years’ experience in information security or ICT security engineering, ideally within complex or mission-critical environments.
  • Strong understanding of security standards, risk assessment methodologies, and security requirements for ICT systems and services.
  • Ability to analyse technical architectures and documentation, and produce clear security deliverables, including reports, procedures and technical notes.
  • Good knowledge of ICT infrastructures and core security concepts, including access control, system hardening, vulnerability management and secure configuration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a practical approach to translating risks into effective solutions.
  • Well organised, able to manage multiple priorities, and comfortable working both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working in international and multicultural environments.

The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • Strong hands-on experience securing complex ICT environments, with expertise across cybersecurity technologies, risk management and security operations.
  • Good knowledge of industry security frameworks and standards, including ISO 27001, NIST, EBIOS, ECSS and CCSDS, with the ability to apply them in practical engineering environments.
  • Proven ability to drive security initiatives, coordinate technical activities and deliver effective solutions across cloud, virtualised and mission-critical systems.
