We are looking for a Clean Space Engineer. You will have EcoDesign and LCA expertise to support ESA’s Clean Space programme and development of the ESA EcoDesign Hub in ESAC, Madrid.

About the client and location

The European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Villanueva de la Canada, Madrid, Spain. ESAC is responsible for all of ESA’s research into astronomy and solar system exploration, as well as being the location of ESA’s space telescope. It is from here that archives are stored on ESA’s science missions, which are then made accessible for researchers all around the world.

Tasks and activities

The scope of activities will include;

EcoDesign & LCA Engineering

  • Overseeing, developing and implementing EcoDesign methodologies and frameworks.
  • Performing Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and environmental analyses.
  • Maintaining and expanding the ESA LCA database.
  • Defining datasets and ensuring methodological consistency.

Data & Analysis

  • Collecting, validating, and analysing technical/environmental data.
  • Performing modelling using SimaPro or similar tools.
  • Interpreting results and defining improvement scenarios.

Programme & Technical Support

  • Supporting S2P COSMIC EcoDesign activities.
  • Contributing to roadmaps, standards, and guidelines.
  • Supporting tender preparation, evaluation, and technical documentation.

Coordination & Outreach

  • Coordinating with ESA teams and industry.
  • Supporting workshops, conferences, and stakeholders.
  • Providing inputs to media communication and outreach.

Internal ESA Support

  • Supporting planning activities within the Clean Space Office.
  • Contributing to working groups and internal coordination.
  • Providing training on OPS-SY processes.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related discipline (BSc/MSc level).
  • 3+ years experience in environmental or space systems engineering.
  • Hands-on experience in LCA.
  • Familiarity with R&D programmes and project reviews.
  • Ability to solve engineering problems collaboratively.
  • Capability to work independently and within teams
  • Ability to interact with multiple stakeholders
  • Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

The following skills and experience are highly desirable:

  • Familiarity with the ESAC environment.
  • Experience with Clean Space Office activities.
  • External interface experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/missions.
