We are looking for a System & Software Engineer to work at EUMETSAT’s premises in Darmstadt, Germany. The role will be focussed on the EUMETSAT Advanced Retransmission Service (EARS), a network of Advanced High Resolution Picture Transmission (AHRPT) reception stations, that provides the Regional Data Service.

About the client and location

The European Organisation for the Exploration of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) is a political organisation comprising of 30 European member states. EUMETSAT operates satellites to monitor weather, climate, and the changing environment. They are responsible for helping to isolate potentially dangerous weather conditions that could affect air travel, farming, and other key service industries.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Analysis of the operational requirements for the EARS services.
  • Support to the definition and integration of the data handling and product processing systems for the new EARS services, including system evolution activities.
  • Technical liaison with the international partners providing the software packages for product processing of the satellite instrument data, including identification of test data and test environment.
  • Architectural and detailed design, implementation, testing and support of the EARS related software and applications,
  • Delivery of software externally developed its installation, configuration, and testing.
  • Coordination and definition of technical interfaces with the external partners and service providers supporting EARS.
  • Preparation of design documentation and other relevant documentation.
  • Verification and validation of software and systems, including the preparation of test plans, test procedures, test data and test tools.
  • Configuration management of the EARS systems.
  • Maintenance and evolution of the operational EARS system.
  • Preparation, validation and maintenance of EARS operational procedures and technical documentation.
  • Support the communication of system changes to the relevant teams in various Departments.
  • Raise, investigate, and coordinate the resolution of anomalies with appropriate modifications or developments.
  • Provide support and guidance to the relevant teams in the Operations and Services to Users Department, regarding system operations and product processing aspects.
  • Provide User Service with information required by Users about services, including documentation and replies to queries.

Skills and experience

The following skills, experience and knowledge are mandatory:

  • University Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Software development, operation, or maintenance in real-time systems.
  • Software development standards.
  • C and C++ experience in a UNIX environment.
  • Linux and UNIX SVR4 (SUN Solaris, IBM AIX) Operating System environments.
  • Networking, distributed applications, TCP/IP services and Web services.
  • Design, development and integration of operational ground systems providing 24 x 7 services.
  • Java programming language.
  • Scripting languages, preferable PERL, KSH/CSH and bash.
  • Development and maintenance of web interfaces and services in a UNIX environment.
  • Source Code control system, preferably Sub Version.
  • Configuration Control.
  • Formalised Software Testing.
  • System verification and validation.
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and obtain a system overview.

The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • Java Message Service based software developments.
  • Web based wide area data distribution.
  • Software deployment and maintenance for systems with a geographical diversity.
  • The provision of real-time data services.
  • Scheduling systems.
  • Writing of formal technical documentation.
  • Processing of satellite sounder, imager or scatterometer observations.
  • Familiarity with the data formats used for Direct Readout by the NOAA and polar orbiting satellites.
  • Communication networks.
  • Experience with interface design.
