We are looking for a Senior Meteorological Systems Engineer to work at Starion’s premises in Darmstadt, Germany.
About the client and location
The STARION team in Germany provides crucial space engineering services, systems and products to our institutional customers in Darmstadt, namely the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) and EUMETSAT. Here we are experienced in ground segment system
engineering, spacecraft operations and assembly, integration and testing, ground station engineering and operations, project management and quality assurance. We have proven capabilities in applying industry standards such as ECSS-E-ST-40/ECSS-Q-ST-80, ISO9001 and the ISO/IEC 27000 series, using ‘best practice’ tools and processes. In addition to our traditional spacecraft development and operational activities, we also work in space safety activities, including space weather, planetary defence, space debris and clean space.
Tasks and activities
The scope of work will include:
- Supporting the deployment and customization of NWC SAF software and MTG-based nowcasting products while integrating satellite data workflows within NMHS forecasting environments.
- Configuring and maintaining cloud-based and on-premise processing environments, integrating with EUMETCast services, and managing data access and dissemination pipelines for operational use.
- Designing and delivering bilingual technical training and mentoring programmes that promote gender balance, regional equity, and local ownership of operational systems.
- Conducting user needs assessments and co-designing workflows and products tailored to African hazard profiles while ensuring inclusive collaboration across diverse institutional contexts.
- Training users to apply nowcasting tools for severe weather forecasting and integrating them into NMHS workflows and national alert systems.
- Liaising with regional and continental partners such as RSMCs, ACMAD, and RCCs to strengthen ownership, alignment, and sustainability of meteorological services and tools.
- Producing bilingual documentation, SOPs, and sustainability manuals to ensure operational consistency and long-term usability.
- Tracking KPIs, evaluating service-level performance, and delivering detailed technical and progress reports to internal and external stakeholders.
Skills and experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- University Degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
- Strong background in operational meteorology, preferably in African or tropical environments.
- IT engineering skills for local/cloud-based system deployments (Linux, scripting, networking).
- Experience working with NMHSs or in capacity-building and training roles.
- Strong understanding of African early warning and climate services landscape.
- Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
- Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken. French is considered an asset.
The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:
- Experience with NWC SAF, MTG services, and nowcasting workflows.
- Experience with international agencies (e.g. WMO, EUMETSAT, ECMWF, African Union bodies).
- Familiarity with institutional stakeholders such as ACMAD, IGAD/ICPAC, AGRHYMET, RCCs.
- Previous involvement in product co-design with African users.
- Project management skills with ability to lead and deliver multi-work-package programmes.
