Are you looking for a new opportunity to take your career to a higher orbit? To join an international group with a successful track record in Space Engineering? A job adapted to your career ambitions and in which you could have an impact for the years to come?

We are looking for a Scientific Systems Engineer to work at Starion’s premises in Darmstadt, Germany.

About the client and location

The STARION team in Germany provides crucial space engineering services, systems and products to our institutional customers in Darmstadt, namely the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) and EUMETSAT. Here we are experienced in ground segment system engineering, spacecraft operations and assembly, integration and testing, ground station engineering and operations, project management and quality assurance. We have proven capabilities in applying industry standards such as ECSS-E-ST-40/ECSS-Q-ST-80, ISO9001 and the ISO/IEC 27000 series, using ‘best practice’ tools and processes. In addition to our traditional spacecraft development and operational activities, we also work in space safety activities, including space weather, planetary defence, space debris and clean space.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Supporting the development, validation, and maintenance of scientific processing chains for meteorological and Earth observation data, defining and implementing algorithms aligned with user needs, and enhancing model accuracy through collaboration with domain experts.
  • Designing, integrating, and maintaining robust, scalable scientific software systems, applying best engineering practices for testing, deployment, automation, and performance optimization in operational environments.
  • Planning, tracking, and reporting on multidisciplinary projects to meet objectives, managing risks and changes, ensuring timely delivery, and driving continuous improvement across processes and teams.
  • Developing and delivering training, workshops, and documentation to engage stakeholders, gathering user feedback, and promoting system adoption through proactive communication and ongoing support.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • Master’s Degree of Ph.D. or in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Systems Engineering or a related field.
  • Background in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, climate studies, or related discipline.
  • Experience with scientific product generation and validation.
  • Proficiency in Python, C/C++, Java or similar languages.
  • Experience with cloud environments, Linux systems, and containerized applications (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of data formats (NetCDF, GRIB, HDF) and processing tools.
  • Proven experience delivering technical training or user support.
  • Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
  • Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • Experience working with operational meteorological agencies or Earth observation missions.
  • Knowledge of EO platforms (e.g., Sentinel, Metop, MTG, EPS-, EPS-SG).
  • Previous experience in multi-national and multi-disciplinary environments.

Why should you apply?

  • You will have the opportunity to work within leading space organisations across Europe.
  • We encourage everyone to think outside the box and to push the boundaries of traditional knowledge. This role is an opportunity to join a forward-thinking company and allows for a deeper understanding of the industry.
  • To be part of a company that values integrity, inspiration, care and collaboration.
  • Benefits include: competitive remuneration packages; unique career opportunities, including working in other countries; access to training and development programmes; flexible relocation support.

We welcome applications from people with disabilities, members of ethnic minorities, all genders, LGBTQ+ individuals and ex-service personnel.
