On behalf of ESA, we are looking for a PA and Safety Engineer to work at ESA ESTEC’s premises in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
In this role, you will be responsible for Product, Safety & Quality across ESA’s flight segment missions; currently including Copernicus CO2M and CHIME. You’ll work closely with engineering teams and international partners to ensure the highest standards of quality, risk management, and mission success, playing a key role in advancing Europe’s space capabilities and climate initiatives.
About the client and location
The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. As ESA’s largest test centre, it is responsible for the majority of space technology and spacecraft development through varying phases of production.
Tasks and activities
The scope of work will include:
- Contractor Monitoring & Compliance: ensure contractors meet ESA’s quality and safety standards for both hardware and software through design reviews, inspections, audits, and test activities.
- Problem Resolution & Management: support the handling of waivers, deviations, and non-conformances by participating in review boards and ensuring proper documentation and resolution.
- Software & Configuration Assurance: ensure the correct application of software PA and configuration management requirements within the system activities.
- Qualification & Acceptance: contribute to system qualification and acceptance by preparing the PA&S dossier and supporting the definition and review of acceptance requirements.
- Reliability & Safety Support: provide reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) input to support project trade-offs and decisions.
Skills and experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- PhD or MSc in Engineering or Technical Sciences from a recognized Institution of secondary studies (University, Ecole supérieure, etc.) or equivalent.
- Minimum of 10 years in the space sector, including at least 5 years in product assurance or quality assurance with a strong focus on spacecraft flight segment (hardware and associated software)
- Familiarity with ESA standards for PA&S and experience working with contractors.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are needed, together with a high degree of organizational and communication abilities and comfortable with working in a diverse and multinational team environment.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
- Eligible for national security clearance.
The following skills and experience are nice to have:
- Knowledge of configuration management principles and tools.
- Experience applying PA within ISO 9001-certified quality systems
