We are looking for a Ground System Engineer to join our team in supporting the European Space Agency’s Earth Observation missions.

The position is based on-site at ESTEC’s premises in Noordwijk, Netherlands.

In this role, you will support the definition, implementation and validation of the ground segment – in collaboration with the current project teams. Furthermore, you will support the preparation of the Spacecraft In-orbit Operations up to, and including, the Commissioning Phase Reviews.

About the client and location

The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. As ESA’s largest test centre, it is responsible for the majority of space technology and spacecraft development through varying phases of production.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Supporting the refinement of the Ground Segment Concept within the project team.
  • Establishing and maintaining the technical and operational requirements baseline accounting for the mission specific aspects for the Flight Operations Segment and Payload Data Ground Segment.
  • Perform station’s coverage and data volume prediction assessment in support of the overall Ground Segment Concept definition.
  • Defining the whole set of GS interfaces and strict monitoring of their evolutions up to GS final acceptance.
  • Contributing to the definition of the Spacecraft to Ground Segment Interfaces (Data and TT&C) and monitoring, in collaboration with the Spacecraft and AIT Manager, the proper implementation and verification of those Interfaces.
  • Coordinating deliveries of the Level 1B and Level 2 processors to the PDGS developers and follow up corresponding integration and validation tasks.
  • Monitoring the implementation of the FOS and PDGS, ensuring compatibility between the Spacecraft and the Ground Segment Elements.
  • Supporting project reviews at Satellite, GS and System levels.
  • Preparing pre-launch ground system validation activities, including the generation of test plans and test data.
  • Coordinating day-to-day pre-launch validation activities, organizing test reviews and generating reports.
  • Participating in the preparation and execution of the in-orbit system validation and verification tasks.
  • Participating in EOP ground segment reviews on other projects.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • PhD or MSc in Engineering from a recognized institution of secondary studies (University, Ecole supérieure, etc.) or equivalent.
  • At least 10 years proven experience in a relevant domain.
  • Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
  • Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
