We are looking for a CESAR IT Engineer to join our team at ESA’s ESAC premises in Madrid, Spain.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to participate in the CESAR Educational project (Cooperation through Education in Science and Astronomy Research), whose initiative is to promote and develop educational activities in Europe with focus on the exploration of the Solar System and the Universe collaborating notably with the SCI Directorate and the different ESA SCI missions.

About the client and location

The European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Villanueva de la Canada, Madrid, Spain. ESAC is responsible for all of ESA’s research into astronomy and solar system exploration, as well as being the location of ESA’s space telescope. It is from here that archives are stored on ESA’s science missions, which are then made accessible for researchers all around the world.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Contributing to the maintenance of free online interactive tools to introduce students into the fields of astronomy, science and technology, with plenty of material for advanced. students to expand their knowledge. These tools and materials are part of the so called “Science Cases”.
  • Maintenance of the CESAR Web, including Web Content, SW and Plugins.
  • CESAR HW Inventory maintenance.
  • Support to schools and other visits for educational/outreach activities from IT/Equipment perspective.
  • Provide IT support to the adequate installation, maintenance and remote operations of the CESAR telescopes and associated infrastructure, with the objective to develop also on-line access to serve students from all over Europe.
  • Support the “Space Science Experience” which consists of inviting classes from schools of the area to work on “Science Cases” together with astrophysicists at ESAC from IT/Equipment perspective.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Engineering (preferably in Computer Science) or a relevant field. Alternatively, Bachelor’s degree along with more than 10 years relevant work experience.
  • Good knowledge in some of these technologies:
    • IT HW Solutions : UNIX and Windows IT admin
    • Databases: PostgreSQL and MySQL
    • Networks: Basic knowledge
    • Web tools: Apache HTTPD, PHP
    • Web design : WordPress
    • Computer skills – Nexus, Git, BitBucket, Python and shellscript
    • Collaborative Tools-  JIRA and Confluence
  • Experience with Agile methodology
  • Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
  • Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish, both written and spoken.
