We are looking for an AI Ecosystem Coordinator to work at Starion’s premises in Frascati, Italy.

You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI for Earth Observation (AI4EO) driving collaboration between academia, industry, and public institutions while strengthening ESA’s leadership in AI-powered innovation. You’ll also take the lead in managing and supporting National PhD contracts and programmes, ensuring they align with the ESA Φ-lab’s mission to foster cutting-edge research, innovation, and talent development across Europe.

About the client and location

STARION Group’s offices in Italy are based in the city of Frascati, located a short 30 minutes outside of Rome. Home to many of our expert employees, our Italian team focuses on services for the European Space Agency (ESA) at their Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN), amongst other projects. Here we also harness capabilities for cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI) on both space and non-space projects.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Supporting the development of strategic partnerships with universities, research centres, and industry to expand the AI4EO ecosystem.
  • Facilitating coordination and communication among stakeholders involved in National PhD schemes and innovation initiatives.
  • Contributing to the identification and adoption of emerging technologies (AI, ML, quantum computing) for EO applications.
  • Engaging with external partners and represent the Φ-lab at relevant events to enhance visibility and foster new opportunities.
  • Promoting capacity-building activities and the integration of young researchers into the AI4EO community.
  • Encouraging cross-team collaboration within the EOP-S8 division and other ESA initiatives.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in project coordination, innovation management, or ecosystem development within a research or technology environment.
  • Familiarity with AI and ML technologies and their applications in EO or related domains.
  • Proven experience managing multi-stakeholder collaborations involving academia, industry, and public institutions.
  • Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
  • Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • Experience with research coordination, talent development, or PhD programme management.
  • Knowledge of ESA programmes, particularly Φ-lab and EO innovation activities.
  • Understanding of cloud computing, data analytics, or AI frameworks applied to EO.
  • Experience in event organization and community engagement.
  • Proactive and collaborative mindset, able to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
